The number of engineering businesses in Saudi Arabia reached 926 by the end of 2000, all operating under the national industries protection system, according to Al-Watan newspaper.
This figure represents 29 percent of the total existing industrial complexes in the kingdom. The total capital invested in engineering industries reached 26.1 billion Syrian riyals in 2000— equivalent to eleven percent of the overall capital reaching the local industrial sector.
The added value contributed by the engineering sector to the Saudi economy reached 10.4 billion SR at the end of 2000. This figure constitutes 30 percent of the overall added value of the Saudi private industrial sector.
Exports of the engineering sector are equivalent to 13.3 percent of the sector’s total sales, while the Saudization rate in this sector stands at 12 percent. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
