The Syrian Prime Minister, Dr. Wael al-Halqi held a meeting to discuss the economic crisis in the country [2], state media reported yesterday.
SANA reported [3] that the meeting focussed on maintaining the Syrian Pound exchange rate with foreign currencies.
The Syrian economy has suffered significantly since the start of the uprising almost two years ago [4]. On Tuesday the government raised the cost of petrol, wheat, and flour, three days after increasing the cost of other commodities. [5]
Yesterday, the United Nations reported that the 22-month uprising has severely damaged the country’s agricultural industry, which could take years to recover from.
The farming sector had not long recovered from the 2006- 2011 drought, which analysts think damaged up to 60 per cent of the agricultural industry.
