His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has announced the âProudly Made in the UAE’ initiative which is to be launched by the Ministry of Economy. The scheme will put in place a general policy to improve national products and their quality.
Shaikh Mohammad’s announcement is expected to encourage many Emirati youth who have invented new products or launched services who command big followings on social networking sites.
A young Emirati man whose company manufactured a pistol had titled his 2008 YouTube video about the pistol as “proudly made in the UAE”.
The Ministry of Economy has already announced its decision to launch a âMade in UAE” portal, an electronic system for goods monitoring and the issuance of electronic certificates of origin. The portal is under construction.
The government organisations are also establishing local brands to support the economy. The Abu Dhabi Farmers Service Centre on Tuesday launched Local Harvest, a brand of locally produced vegetables and fruits.
“We are committed to develop UAE national entrepreneurship and to raise the efficiency of corporate performance. We strive to enhance the capacity of UAE nationals and increase the attractiveness of UAE as a destination for foreign investment,” Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, said earlier.
The ministry is working to develop policies and economic legislation in accordance with global best practices to build a competitive knowledge economy and to develop the industrial sector with an emphasis on small and medium enterprises, he said.
“The small and medium enterprises [SMEs] can play a strong role in driving our economy. We are in the process of finalising new legislation that will encourage the growth of SMEs through innovation and creativity, and in turn benefit our young entrepreneurs,” Al Mansouri said.
