As the official Presidential election race began in May between the army leader Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and the leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, one video, which has received more than 200,000 views, claims that what currently is “on the minds of all Egyptians” is whether Sisi’s mother is Jewish or not.
The creator, Mashhour, argues that al-Sisi was born in el-Gamaliya, which is located on the border of the Jewish neighbourhood of Cairo’s old city and asserts that “Only Jews resided in the Jewish quarter.” However, according to The Chronikler, this area, albeit Jewish in character, also hosts a population of mixed backgrounds.
Mashour, who earlier worked at Al Jazeera’s Mubasher Misr, the banned offshoot of the Qatari news network, is becoming notorious for his “revelations.” He has earlier “exposed” that Egypt has become a Christian state…
The video has mainly received support among ousted president Mohammed Morsi’s followers and the Muslim Brotherhood, who, according to The Chronikler, published the video on the group’s official website.
Alleged allegiances to Israel, or the United States, are common ways of defamation on the Egyptian political arena.
