Small-screen single gal Calista Flockhart has secretly adopted a baby boy she watched come into the world on New Year's Eve.
The 35-year-old Ally McBeal star is reportedly ecstatic about becoming a mother and has rejected several movie roles to devote herself to her new son.
"She's been talking about adopting a child for a long time now," one friend told the National Enquirer. "I'm glad her dream has come true. She's made to be a mom."
Photos of the pencil-thin actress tenderly cuddling the swaddled tot, a diaper bag slung over her shoulder, appear in the new issue of the supermarket tabloid.
"Calista loves kids and plans to have more. Someday she'd love to get pregnant. But she doesn't have a man in her life at the moment, so she decided to adopt," a pal said.
The actress has been talking about having kids for a couple of years, and in a 1999 interview said she didn't plan on waiting for the right man to start a family.
About a year ago, she brought up the baby issue again, saying that she might stick with her Fox television series if she had one, for "stability."
She put her adoption plan in motion last year. And three months ago, she met a pregnant mother of four who wanted to give up her new child.
The woman invited Flockhart to be in the delivery room with her, and Calista rushed to the hospital when she got the New Year's Eve call that labor had started.
Minutes after the infant was born, he was placed into Flockhart's arms and she reportedly cooed at him: "Happy New Year, my darling baby."
"I see new mothers every day, and I've never seen one happier than Calista," a hospital staffer said. "She adored that baby from the second she took him in her arms.
"It was a magical moment."
Nurses at the hospital offered Flockhart a small lounge where she could spend a few minutes with the newborn. She stayed for two hours, holding him in her arms.
"I have seen many babies born and given to their mothers. It is always such a special moment, and this was no different," one nurse said.
"As Calista took that baby boy in her arms, I felt the love that came from her heart. You could tell that she will make a wonderful mother.'
Flockhart, who plans to take her son to a child-care center on the Ally McBeal set when she's working, joins a growing list of celebs who have opted to adopt. – Albawaba.com.
