Actor Bassem Yakhour is set to star in a groundbreaking new series for the holy month tackling corruption and crime in Syrian society. 'Al Muftah' (The Key) is a drama, involving 30 episodes, looking at how people take advantage of the law and turn others in to victims.
It's a important subject, particularly with the Arab Spring in full swing in Egypt and Syria descending into civil war . Political commentators often point to corruption at the top as the reason behind revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
Bassem plays 'Masoud', a college law student who is forced to drop out when he can no longer afford the fees. He then starts work at a strategic government institute and discovers an empire built on lies: conning people, playing with the law and getting away with it.
The script is written by Khaled Khalifah and directed by Hisham Sharbatji. A number of Syrian actors star in the drama alongside Bassem like Shukran Murtaja, Salma Al Masri, Qamar Khalaf, Mohamed Hadaqi, Abd Al Minem Amayri, Dima Al Jundi, Dima Qandalfat, Fayez Qazaq and others.
