A Cairo’s appeals court has postponed the verdict in the case against Egyptian businessman Hussam Abu El Fotooh, ex-husband of Egyptian belly-dancer Dina. Hussam, who is accused of producing pornographic CDs of Dina and other women he had been intimate with, had filed an appeal of a previous verdict of a jail sentence of one year with hard labor.
The court has set April 9, 2005 as the new hearing date, in which a final verdict will be made. In a shocking and unexpected move Dina had decided to drop all charges against her ex-husband, who was the cause of the biggest scandal that hit Egyptian society the past couple of years. The dancer had made her announcement at the appeals court in saying that she does not wish to press charges against Hussam for violating her personal life.
Dina also testified that the pornographic CD, which featured her and Hussam in a very intimate situation and was seeped out to the public and on the internet, was in fact filmed in his home and office in London, which was the claim of Hussam’s defense attorney.
Hussam’s attorney in turn demanded that the case be dropped, especially after Dina made her testimony, and added that the pornographic scenes were filmed abroad and an Egyptian court cannot determine if such actions are legal or not in London.
Dina had filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband Hussam for violating her rights while she was married to him and making pornography films of her without her knowledge. Dina had intended to make sure that Hussam pays the price for the fact that it is against the law for a man to film his wife in such an indecent circumstance.
