The film Muwaten wa Mukhber wa Harami (Citizen, Detective and Thief) won six awards by the jury of the 28th Film Society Festival, while it failed in the audience’s poll.
Muwaten wa Mukhber wa Harami won the best film award as well as the awards for best script and direction by Daoud Abdel Sayyed; best music by Rageh Daoud and filming by Samir Mahran. Also Salah Abdulla won the best actor award for his role in the film.
The film Ula Thanawi (First Secondary) by Mohammed Abu Seif, won five awards for best decoration, best editing, best supporting actress (Hanan Tork) and best supporting actor (Essam Maher). Ashraf Mohammed won the festival jury’s special prize for the film script.
The best actress award went to Sawsan Bader for her role in the film al Abwab al Mughlaqa (Closed Doors) by Atef Hatata, while the film star Ahmed Zaki won the Distinction prize for his performance and role in the film Ayyam al Sadat (Sadat Days) by Mohammed Khan.
Azza Shalabi, the writer of the film Asrar al Banat (Girls Secrets) by Magdi Ahmed Ali, won the critic Sami al Salamoni’s award for creativity and innovation. Also, the young actress Maya Shiha secured a special appreciation certificate from the jury for her role in the film.
However, the 28th Film Society Festival awards have revealed the contradiction between the audience’s view and the jury’s. 70.2 % of the festival audience’s votes, including critics and people who are interested in cinema, went to Ayyam al Sadat, 70.1 of the votes went to the film Gawaz Bi Qarar Gomhuri (Marriage by Presidential Decree) by Khaled Yousef, while Muwaten wa Mukhber wa Harami won only 32.7 of the votes to be the last in the list of the participating films.
The critic Tareq al Shinnawi told the daily al Sharq al Awsat that Muwaten wa Mukhber wa Harami is a distinguished film not only in Daoud Abdel Sayyed’s artistic career, but also in the Arab cinema during the last ten years.
6 out of 32 Egyptian films screened during the year 2001, competed in the formal contest: Ula Thanawi, Asrar al Banat, al Abwab al Moghlaqa, Ayyam al Sadat, Gawaz Bi Qarar Gomhuri and Muwaten Mukhber wa Harami – Albawaba.com
