The Egyptian Court of Cassation has decided to retry Egyptian
businessman Hisham Tal’at Mustafa and former police official Muhsin Al Sukari for
the murder of Lebanese singer Suzan Tamim. The new trial date has been set to
be on February 5.

The court, which is considered the exclusive body atop the
judicial hierarchy in Egypt, had accepted the appeals presented by the
defendants and dropped the previous 15 years sentence for Hisham and imprisonment
for life for Muhsin. The court has also decided that different court than the
one that convicted Hisham and Muhsin be assigned to try the two defendants.
According to the London based Elaph, defense lawyer Baha Abu
Shaqa, who is representing Hisham, stated that it is expected that the previous
sentences will be either lessened or even the defendant may be found innocent
of all charges and released.
Baha added that Hisham did not receive a fair trial and the
defense did not get the chance to present its case entirely. Baha also said
that the court had made its verdict suddenly not giving the defense attorneys
to present all their evidence.
