Egyptian legend Laila Elwi is back on TV, starring in a new drama series that sees her take a drastic turn away from the usual soft femine character playing romantic roles that gets cast-typed into.
Here she takes up the part of something of a battle-ax from the Mamluk period who goes by the name of "Nafisa Al Bayda" (White Nafisa) in the series "Napoleon wa Al Mahrousa", (Napolean and Egypt). This saga is framed around the story of the French Napoleon Bonaparte invasion of Egypt during the years 1798-1801 .
The series captures the spirit of that era, through the lens of one Egyptian family's story. It focuses on the most monumental events that shaped Egyptian society , beginning with the standoff at 'Hbrakhitt' between Napoleon Bonaparte and Murad Beik leader of the Mamluks. It builds on with the first and second revolutions in Cairo, right up until the French were defeated and took their leave of Egypt. Laila Elwi appears in a star-studded cast that includes Sharif Salameh, Sawsan Baderm Faraf Yousef, Arwa Joudeh and Sameh Al Sariti, as well as an array of French actors.
