Madonna wants to get married at London’s Westminster Abbey, but church officials say that's not likely.
The blond pop queen, engaged to film director Guy Ritchie, said she loves the historic Abbey, the scene of many royal weddings.
"I'd like to marry in Westminster Abbey. Listen, if you can be in a place like England with so much grand architecture, why not take advantage?" the Material Mom said in a London radio interview.
But Abbey bosses last night put a damper on that desire, saying that only royals or those approved by the prime minister can get hitched there.
"Unfortunately, it would be almost impossible for Madonna," said John McAngus, the Abbey's assistant receiver general.
Her other choice, she said, would be St. Paul's Cathedral, where Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot.
But that's just as unlikely.
While the 42-year-old millionaire could easily afford St. Paul's "facility" fee, private individuals are rarely allowed to wed in the cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century.
About 40 ceremonies are held there each year and each marriage has to be specially licensed by the archbishop of Canterbury.
"The cathedral is not a parish church and we're not actually licensed for marriages," a spokeswoman for St. Paul's said.
"But we can be granted them by the archbishop . . ."
"As Madonna is a divorcée, the Church of England could not marry her."
Earlier this week, the singer, previously married to Sean Penn, said she and Ritchie, director of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, would probably tie the knot next year.
Madonna is currently riding the charts with her smash record Music. The mother of daughter Lourdes (by her personal trainer Carlos Leon) and newborn son Rocco (by Richie) recently purchased an $11 million townhouse in London. – Albawaba.com.
