Sara Shahin was crowned as Egypt’s Beauty in “Miss Egypt 2001” contest, which took place at Khofo Hall of Cairo Conference Center. Sixteen girls reached the final competition stage after extremely difficult tests in many fields including general knowledge, international issues, languages and other aspects in addition to beauty and body measurements.
The title of the first lady in waiting was won by Salma Shahin and the second lady in waiting was won by Hibah Mandour. The queen, Sara Shahin, 18 years-old, will represent Egypt in the Miss World contest which will be held in Puerto Rico on May 11, 2001.
The jury committee consisted of the writer Mohammed Salmawi, Samia Elwiyyah, and a representative from the international Queens’ of Beauty Organization. This is in addition to a number of art and beauty figures in Egypt and other countries including Miss Italy 1999, Manylana Terd, Miss Zimbabwe 2000 who ranked 10th in running for Miss World and Miss Lebanon 1999, and Norma Naoum. Among the other committee members were the Egyptian actor Mustafa Fahmi, Actress Mervat Amin, Plastic Surgery Specialist Mohammed Subhi and Karen Fahmi, Miss Egypt for 1998.
The ages of the girls who participated in the competition ranged between 18 and 28 years and all spoke both the English and French except one girl who also speaks Russian, her mother’s native tongue. Most of the girls’ were born under the astrological sign of Virgo.
The Italian singer Stella and the Egyptian French singer Omar Al Wakil hosted the festival. The competition was cancelled last year in solidarity with the Palestinian Intifada. The last winner of the title “Miss Egypt” was Angie Abdulla in 1999.
