Director Abeer Lutfi has snared Egyptian actress Rania Farid Shawqi for the starring role in the play Raghbah Taht Shajaret Al Durdar (Desire Under the Elms), based on the play which by same name by American author Eugene O’Neill.
O’Neill is best known as the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1936 and the architect of modern American theater.
“Rehearsals for the play will begin after Shawqi delivers her baby and is back in shape next November,” the director told the London-based daily Al Sharq Al Awsat.
Lutfi said she nominated Shawqi because she fit the part.
Costarring in the play, with a modified script by Safaa Al Toukhi and produced by Hanager Theater, are Abdel Rahman Abu Zahra and Fathi Abdel Wahab.
The play will be staged at the national theater in early 2002 – Albawaba.com
