It has been apparent that the plays staged at the Syrian theaters during this season were scripted, directed and performed by a number of Syrian actors. These performances have been experimental and search for a new art language.
The process of combination between the scripting and directing of a play by the same directors is indicative of a clear lack for scripts in Arabic. But the basic issue faced each season is the lack of enough stages to cope up with the number of theatergoers. The availability of two theaters with one of them not enough to accommodate 155 viewers cannot be tolerated.
The Syrian actor, Ghassan Masoud, who played wonderful roles on the stage more than a year ago is gearing up for his new play Duplimasiyyoun (Diplomats) scripted by him too. Also actor Tallab Naser al Din is gearing up for his new play Ahzan A’berah (Accidental Sadness) which he scripted.
Among the shows scheduled for this season, according to the UAE daily al Bayan, is the play Fawdha (Chaos) by the actor Abdel Mene’m A’mairi who scripted the play Concerto written by Maher Salibi and Muwaffaq Masoud under the direction of Maher Salibi. This is in addition to the play Tajer al Bondiqiyyah (Vinice Merchant) by William Shakespeare directed by Hasan Edlibi.
On the other hand the National Theater will host two visiting shows, the first Hayat Hayat (Life, Life) by Ghannam Ghannam from Jordan and the second from Lebanon entitled Counter Bus by Pauline Haddad. Director Roula Fattak directed this play which was played at the French Cultural Center in Damascus more than a year ago.
This season will also witness other plays performed at the higher Theatrical Institute as part of its plan for this year -- Albawaba.com
