An Algerian newspaper on wednesday reported that Israel is using its satellites"Ofek 6" and "Ofek 7" to spy on vital Algerian military installations. The Algeria News newspaper conveyed "Ofek 6" is trying to obtain precise images of the Algerian air base in Umm Bawaki, which is largest military air base in Africa.
The paper said that "Ofek-6" had already taken pictures of Algerian nuclear reactors "Noor" in the Draria and "Salam" in Ayun Wasarah. These two peaceful reactors are supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Israel, however, claims that Algeria uses nuclear reactors to non-peaceful purposes.
In addition, the Israeli satellite "Ofek 7" is taking precise images of a number of Algerian military installations, the report added.
Algerian sources said that "these Israeli efforts were intensified after the conclusion of several huge military deals by Algeria, especially with Russia. These deals made Algeria the third country in the Arab world and Africa in terms of armament. The visit of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to Moscow in 2008 paved the way for the Algerian Air Force to get Sukhoi 28 fighter jets instead of the "MIG-29" aircraft which had a technical glitch.
