Syria dismissed on Tuesday a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in which she said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had lost legitimacy and was "not indispensable". "Syria strongly condemns the statements of the American foreign minister... these remarks are provocative and aim at continuing the internal tension," Syria's state news agency SANA said.
Clinton reacted Monday to the attacks by mobs on the French and American embassies in Damascus. She said these attacks demonstrated the Syrian president was not serious about reform. "From our perspective, he has lost legitimacy," Clinton told reporters at the State Department. "He has failed to deliver on promises he has made, he has sought and accepted aid from the Iranians as to how to repress his own people."
