The Sudanese foreign ministry received on Monday a reply to a letter it had forwarded to the new US administration calling for a “new chapter in the Khartoum-Washington ties.”
The reply letter, sent by US Secretary of state Colin Powell, was delivered to Sudan’s Foreign Minster, Mustafa Osman Ismail by US charge d'affaires in Khartoum Raymond Brown, according to daily press.
Al Rai Al Aam daily quoted Brown as saying that the new US administration is drawing up a policy towards Sudan, with a peaceful settlement to the internal conflict topping its foreign agenda.
The US diplomat told Ismail that Powell was briefed on Friday by experts on the Sudanese question, said the paper.
The charge d'affaires added that Washington is leading intensive efforts at the highest levels to crystallize its Sudan policy.
For his part, Ismail stressed Sudanese willingness to normalize relations with the US, ensuring "a positive contribution" by the US to reaching peace in Sudan and to establishing firm bilateral economic ties, the statement said – Albawaba.com
