United Nations Security Council Kofi Annan in a telephone conversation on Saturday spoke to Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on international situation especially Iranian nuclear program.
President Ahmadinejad said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to hold talks on the nuclear program, adding that Iran prefers the negotiations to be held democratically without any precondition or any threat.
According to IRNA, Ahmadinejad reiterated that Iran respects Non-Proliferation Treaty and Safeguards Agreement of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and that the UN Nuclear Agency has verified no diversion has taken place from civilian use of nuclear technology by Iran.
He said that Tehran believes that the international treaty (NPT) should be implemented fairly and all the NPT member states should enjoy provisions of the international convention equally.
"The United Nations and the Secretary General are expected to handle the crisis situation certain states have created for Iran. They fail to observe Iranian rights in the context of NPT, However, Iran believes that diplomacy and dialogue are effective to remove the logjam and supports the role of the UN secretary-general to bring the current crisis to an end," the Iranian leader was quoted as saying.
