A top Al Qaeda spokesman, also a son-in-law of slain Al Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden , has been captured and charged in the United States for conspiring to kill Americans, according to an indictment.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was captured in Jordan and is expected to appear in a federal court in New York City to face the charges, Fox News reports.
US attorney Michael Rosensaft said that it is likely that Ghaith will face a number of terrorism-related charges and possibly murder, which could carry the death penalty, adding that trial will last for quite some time.
Rosensaft further said that some of the evidence against Abu Ghaith will be a challenge for prosecutors to bring to court if it is classified.
However, Ghaith's capture has sparked criticism from Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte, who said that the decision of the Obama administration to bring Ghaith to New York is sneaky and against the will of the Congress.
According to Graham, Ghaith, who had urged Muslims everywhere to fight the United States and warned of more attacks similar to those of Sept. 11 , should have been sent straight to the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility in Cuba for extended questioning as he is an enemy combatant.
Ghaith is identified as a major Al Qaeda core official by the New America Foundation think tank in Washington and was involved in the planning in the 9/11 attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon, according to official sources. (ANI )
