The top-selling Sun said that Thursday's announcement that the celebrity couple were separating after nine years of marriage came hours after it revealed Ryan, 38, was now close to the 36-year-old New Zealand-born Crowe, according to Reuters on Friday.
"Meg and Russell are extremely close and incredibly fond of each other," the tabloid quoted an unnamed friend as saying. They just click. She feels young again and they've been having a wonderful time in London."
Ryan is in London with her and Quaid's eight-year-old son Jack while shooting "Proof of Life" with Crowe and Kurt Russell at Pinewood Studios.
A publicist for Ryan and Quaid, who were considered one of Hollywood's steadier couples, said the "mutual and amicable" split took place six weeks ago. There was no word on whether they had plans to divorce.
The Mirror said Ryan and Crowe had been filming together in Ecuador and Poland. They were seen together at a secret David Bowie show in London this week, it added.
Meanwhile, Hollywood Online reported that if rumors of a Ryan/Crowe coupling is shocking, consider all those stateside tab readers who've been lapping up those curious tab reports of a Crowe/Jodie Foster pairing.
Of course, it's not just British wags who are running with the Ryan/Crowe story. Last week, E! Online gossip Ted Casablanca noted that the two stars were spotted sharing a cigarette during a stroll in New York City.
Ryan, star of hits like "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle," married Quaid on Valentine's Day in 1991.
Quaid, 46, who starred in the steamy 1987 thriller "The Big Easy," counts the 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap" and this year's "Frequency" among his recent hits.
The couple met in 1987 on the set of "Innerspace" and teamed up again a year later on "D.O.A" when they started dating.
