Egypt recalled its ambassador in Algeria for "consultations" on Thursday after attacks against Egyptian football fans in Sudan and businesses in Algiers, the official MENA news agency reported. The move came hours after Algeria's ambassador to Cairo was summoned to the Egyptian foreign ministry.
The Egyptian government called in the Algerian ambassador after getting reports about violence by Algerian supporters against Egyptian fans who travelled to Khartoum. An Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman said the Algerian government also had a responsibility for the safety of Egyptians living in Algeria.
Meanwhile, the Algerian national team arrived Thursday afternoon in Houari Boumediטne international airport of Algiers. The Algerian team qualified to 2010 World Cup finals Wednesday in Oum-Dourman (Sudan) after beating Egypt (1-0) in a playoff match.
