Jordan Pioneers and Sesame Workshop, the producers of the national children educational program; Hikayat Simsim, celebrated on May 27th 2010 at 10:00 AM with Jordan television and partners at the Jordan Television Gardens the launch of season three of the series that promotes children’s literacy and numeracy skills and reinforces educational messages in an entertaining way through the entertaining Muppet characters: Tonton, Juljul, Elmo and the Simsim family,
The series, which will be aired on Jordan TV five days a week at 4:30 pm, is an essential tool in promoting children’s learning and raising children’s awareness in regard to health and hygiene, national identity, road safety, mutual respect, and tolerance and understanding through uniquely entertaining programming, full of Muppet studio segments, animations and live action segments. The new episodes focus on preparing children for formal schooling in a fun manner, using various multimedia components, to help them develop their knowledge, language, cognitive and social skills. .
Alongside the TV series, 80,000 outreach materials will be distributed nationwide to children, parents and teachers and 170 parents and teacher’s educational workshops will take place. Sesame Workshop, as the largest informal educator of children worldwide, in partnership with Hikayat Simsim, help develop local capacity in edutainment in early childhood education, research, and content development.
Commenting on launch event, General Manager of Jordan Pioneers, Khaled Haddad, said “Hikayat Simsim, as a leading Jordanian project for early childhood education, leaves a major impact on children’s behaviors and practices, through our simplified methods and funny characters, Tonton and Juljul”.
“The sustainability of the program, with all its educational messages, falls under the umbrella of the responsibility we and our partners undertake toward early childhood protection and development; also, a very helpful and essential role can be played by the parents and the educators, as their cooperation and contribution to this project will extremely enhance the positive influence on the children’s lives”.
“Our efforts and aspirations have no limits, and we are currently in the process of producing the 4th season of Hikayat Simsim, to ensure sustainability and continuity of this vision”, he added.
USAID Mission Director for Jordan, Mr. Jay L. Knott stated “I am particularly excited about this initiative because it goes beyondthe focus on the cognitive skills and children's literacy and numeracycapabilities. This project also serves as a catalyst for positive socialchange by addressing self-esteem, respect for others and other cultures,and pride in self and country. Its focus on instilling civic pride inyoung children will lead to a generation of young Jordanians who willgrow up wanting to contribute positively and productively to theircommunity, country and the world at-large”.
Hikayat Simsim is Made Possible by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Bank of Jordan. The project works within the parameters of the Ministry of Education’s Education Reform for the Knowledge Economy Program (ERfKE) that works on reforming education in Jordan and enhancing students’ knowledge economy skills to build and sustain a better future for Jordan’s children.
