An awareness camp aimed at educating the public about the harmful effects of high cholesterol levels in the blood, which can lead to Hyperlipidemia, was held in the lobby area of Hamad General Hospital, a member of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition in which the levels of lipids (fats that include cholesterol and triglyceride) in the bloodstream become abnormally high and can cause heart problems. Hyperlipidemia, along with diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), a genetic disposition, and smoking are all major risk factors for coronary heart disease. Visitors to the hospital were able to check their blood cholesterol levels at the camp. They were tested for high cholesterol and asked to complete a questionnaire about their food habits. Attendees were also briefed by qualified dieticians on the changes they can make in their dietary habits to improve their health and wellbeing.Dieticians from HMC had also set up counters marked red and green, each containing food products which were both high and low in cholesterol. Visitors were informed about the dietary products that are healthy for the body such as fruits and vegetables and those that are more harmful and can add to the body fat leading to Hyperlipidemia.
