Iran's government announced on Sunday a three-day public mourning for the late Syrian President Hafez Assad, reported Iran news Agency (IRNA), quoting information and press department at presidential office.
Iran's foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi signed a condolence book at the Syrian Embassy to Tehran in memory of Assad, who died at the age of 69, the agency said.
The minister voiced the sympathy of the Iranian nation and government with the brotherly and friendly country of Syria.
Kharrazi expressed hope that Tehran and Damascus would pursue the path of progress and success on domestic, regional and international scenes, added IRNA.
Meanwhile, minister of culture Aytaollah Mohajerani sent condolence messages to Syrian ministers of culture, tourism and communications on Assad's death, which, he said, is a "tragic loss for the world of Islam."
"Undoubtedly, the unique and effective role of Assad in forging solidarity and unity in Muslim Ummah and perseverance against the occupying Zionism's hegemony would be everlasting in history of the world," Mohajerani was quoted as saying - Albawaba.com
