A member of Iran's volunteer fundamentalist militia was killed and three others were injured in a violent confrontation as they moved to thwart a kidnapping, state radio said Thursday.
The would-be kidnappers fled after the incident Wednesday evening in the city of Rey, but three of them were caught later, the radio said.
The radio did not specify how many people were involved in the attempted kidnapping.
Militiamen, known as Bassiji, have been attacked 15 times over the past three months in Rey, south of Tehran, the radio said.
The Iranian government counts five million Bassijis, who are under the direct command of supreme spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini with orders to be "a rapid intervention force of the people." - TEHRAN (AFP)
