An attempted jail break at Taji central prison, North of Baghdad, has left at least seven security officers dead, Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday.
The attempt at freeing the prisoners began when a car bomb exploded near the main entrance of the prison, according to Iraqi justice ministry officials.
The attack came less than 24 hours after a suicide bombing in the same town , where members of a government-backed Sunni militia were targeted while trying to collect their salaries.
Iraq has faced a deteriorating security situation in the last few months as Shia/Sunni divides deepen in the country. The nation's Shia-led government has been accused of marginalizing the minority Sunni community with new anti-terror laws.
Iraq's Northern largely Kurdish province has also faced attacks as the regional government disputes oil contracts with Baghdad. Following a series of bombing in the Northern capital of Kirkuk , the region's govenor told Al Jazeera that he believed al Qaeda was back in Iraq.
