Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein received on Wednesday personal envoy of Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Head of the Yemeni Parliament Sheikh Abdulla al-Ahmer.
During the meeting, the Yemeni envoy conveyed a verbal letter from President Saleh to President Saddam Hussein, dealing with issues of the Arab nation and bilateral relations. In addition, he conveyed President Saleh's greetings to the Iraqi leader, wishing him good health and a long life and the Iraqi people further progress, prosperity and victory, according to the Iraq news agency.
Al-Ahmer affirmed Sanaa’s position in supporting the lifting of the unjust embargo imposed on Iraq. He also expressed confidence that the Iraqi leadership and people would overcome hard circumstances.
On his part, the Iraqi ruler welcomed his guest and asked him to convey his salutes to President Saleh and to the people of Yemen. Saddam Hussein stressed that Baghdad wanted a comprehensive settlement that could lift the embargo according to Security Council resolutions.
"They have to implement their commitments as we did", he said, adding, "There are mutual commitments and Iraq had implemented its part but they did not do so". President Hussein also confirmed that Washington wanted to devastate any Arab capability that can support the Arab nation, and wanted to “smash” any Arab state if it represented a threat to Israel.
