Networks in businesses across the region continue to be exposed to serious security threats unless solutions are put in place to prevent unauthorized access, according to Mahesh Vaidya, CEO of ISIT, the Middle East arm of Europe’s pioneering data storage and security solutions provider. Vaidya’s comments came during the launch of ISIT’s Virtual Network Shield service in the Middle East as part of its new security offerings to all businesses whose critical data is most vulnerable to unauthorized access using power line adapters and weakly configured wireless access points.
Vaidya said: “A number of our customers have noticed that a rising trend of data theft and sabotage has been the cause of power line network adaptors being slipped into secure office environments. Small and easy to put in place, these adaptors have passed through security controls exposing a company’s most critical asset at risk.
“Our dependence on technology to store data, let alone operating businesses, on a daily basis is so intense that it makes us most vulnerable to cyber threats on many levels. From malicious network sabotage and disruption through the injection of viruses, worms and trojans, businesses need to prevent the potential risks to ensure the safety of their company’s most critical assets.”
According to an industry white paper published in January 2010, global industry monitoring organizations in 2007 saw more than 162 million records compromised. These included credit cards and social security numbers, compared with 49 million records compromised in the previous year. What’s more, the report also reveals that companies including those in the Fortune 1000 have experienced propriety information and intellectual property (IP) losses of between US$53 and US$59 billion in one year alone.
Vaidya added: “ISIT’s new Virtual Network Shield service will act as a gatekeeper to ensure a company’s intellectual property is not exposed to threats that can jeopardise the stake of a business. With 18 years in the security and storage field, our team of security consultants and engineers at ISIT Middle East provides the expertise and deep-rooted understanding required to protect the network infrastructure of organisations across sectors in the Middle East.”
