Islamic militant gunmen killed twelve members of a civilian defense unit in an attack on their barracks in the eastern part of Algeria, newspaper reports in Algiers said Wednesday.
An estimated 20 militants attacked the barracks at Oum Toub, in the Skikdia region some 500 kilometers east of Algiers, using grenades and automatic weapons.
Around 40 civilian guards fended off the attack on Monday for around an hour before they ran out of ammunition and fled, AFP reported.
The militants took a number of weapons before burning down the barracks. No confirmation of the incident was available from the authorities Wednesday. (Albawaba.com)
