Agence France Presse reported Wednesday that the Arab League will meet in an emergency session April 9 to discuss the deteriorating Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
Arab League Chief Nabil Al Arabi announced the emergency meeting Wednesday.
Earlier Wednesday, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas submitted requests for recognition in 15 U.N. agencies after Israeli authorities refused to release a fourth and final group of Palestinian prisoners as promised Saturday . Both Abbas' and Tel Aviv's actions represent violations of the peace talk agreement conditions established back in July 2013 as the dialogue process continues to crumble.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this week in an effort to "save" the talks, but canceled his meeting Wednesday with Abbas Tuesday evening following the Palestinian leader's public announcement that Palestine would pursue recognition at the U.N. institutions in response to Tel Aviv's failure to release the prisoners.
The league will focus on Tel Aviv's refusal to release this last group of prisoners , according to Arabi.
