Top Israeli and Palestinian security officials were to meet Wednesday in an attempt to restore calm to the West Bank and Gaza Strip after almost a month of deadly clashes.
The aim of the meetings would be "to try to find the means to reduce the violence" in the Palestinian territories, the Israel army said in a statement.
The Israeli side would include Generals Yitzak Eitan and Yom Tov Samia, the Israeli military commanders with responsibility for the West Bank and Gaza Strip respectively.
The army did not say where or when the meetings would take place.
In Gaza, a Palestinian security official said the meetings would discuss "a withdrawal of Israeli military forces and tanks at the entrances of Palestinian towns."
One of the meetings would be between Samia and Gaza general security chief Abdel Razeq al-Majeidah, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity – JERUSALEM (AFP)
