Fifty African Foreign Minister met in Tripoli Wednesday to discuss a formula for regional unity, a Libyan official source said.
In an opening speech, Libyan President Moamer Kadhafi, a strong proponent of African unity, argued that "only unity between African states will allow our continent to negotiate with the giants" of the political and economic worlds, an allusion notably to the United States and Europe.
"Anyone who doesn't want that unity should leave the continent," he added.
Last September the Libyan president organized an extraordinary summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) at which it was decided to establish an "African Union" conforming to the OAU charter.
The ministers meeting in Tripoli will examine the possibility of founding a "United States of Africa" along the lines of the United States of America -- TRIPOLI (AFP)
