Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi has offered his services as mediator in the crisis between Algeria and Egypt following the recent World Cup qualifiers, official media said on Tuesday. "As chairman of the African Union, the Guide of the Revolution (Kadhafi) is going to work to bridge the gulf that has opened up between Egypt and Algeria," Libya's official JANA news agency reported.
It said that Kadhafi had agreed to play the role of mediator following a request from Arab League chief Amr Mussa.
Egypt and Algeria have each accused the other of failing to protect their citizens and property from attacks by rival football fans. Cairo withdrew its envoy to Algiers last week and Algeria has demanded an explanation from Cairo.
