Political will and public economic support are the three most significant weapons in battling desertification. This was the conclusion of environmental experts who had gathered at the Dubai International Conference on Desertification 2000.
The conference drew more than 300 experts from 30 countries who, according the Gulf News daily, discussed the cost of fighting land degradation and the application of remote sensing and geographic information systems to study desertification. One expert said that UAE, Sudan and South Africa were good examples of countries that were able to combine the three elements -- of political will and the economic and public support - to successfully implement desertification plans.
