At least 34 people died in governmental raids that struck Shabwa early Thursday morning. According to Yemeni sources, those killed were suspected Al-Qaeda gunmen who were gathered for a meeting. The attacks occurred at 4 a.m. in Rafath, Shabwa, which is a remote mountainous region 650 kilometers east of the Yemeni capital.
According to the Yemeni sources, Al-Qaeda leader Nasser Wahsi along with Saudi Saeed Shahri attended the meeting. However, eyewitnesses said that the dead were mostly civilians and not Al-Qaeda activists.
