The marriage between German Lufthansa and the Jeddah-based International Travel Services Co. has ended after 15 years.
Currently, the airline representatives in the Arab Peninsula, Mr. Michael Zuscher, is conducting negotiations with several companies that are interested in becoming the new Saudi agent. Talking to a Sharq al Awsat daily, Mr. Zuscher did not specify the reason for his company's bid to have a new agent.
It is believed that the leading Saudi commercial groups that are involved in the travel and tourism industry are competing for this much desirable agency. Lufthansa is one of the most active European airliners in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, According to Zuscher, the German airline is expected to boost its Middle Eastern sales this year by 7 percent compared to 1999 when they amounted to DM200 million. The Saudi market is Lufthansa's primary regional outlet with about 28 percent of total sales.
