Iraqi President Saddam Hussein received a message from Moroccan King Mohammed VI on Wednesday thanking him for supporting "Morocco's unity", the Iraq news agency reported, according to AFP.
The King thanked the Iraqi leader for, "his nationalist stands and support for the unity of Morocco", a reference to Rabat's conflict with Algiers over the Western Sahara.
The message was handed over by an advisor to the king, Abbes al-Jarrari, who assured Saddam of Morocco's "solidarity" with Iraq and praised "the Iraqi people's resistance to hostile schemes targeting Iraq's independence", the agency added.
Iraq has good relations with both Morocco and Algeria, which have long been at loggerheads over the Western Sahara issue.
Rabat accuses Algiers of continuing to back the Polisario Front, which is seeking independence for the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara annexed by Morocco in 1975. (Albawaba.com)
