Libya is ready to have relations with the United States based on mutual respect, secretary of Libya's people committee for African Unity, Abdeslam Triki, was quoted by ArabicNews.com as saying Tuesday.
"We are ready at any time to work with the USA for normalizing our relations with the US," he said.
"Libya's policy is defined by the people and the leadership, and there is no problem between us and Americans," he said noting, however, "we have been living, and still can live, without these relations."
Triki said that Libya used to be the US second largest trade partner in the Arab world before relations were frozen, said ArabicNews.
The annual volume of trade exceeded six billion dollars, he said.
Ties between the two countries were cut off following the Lockerbie disaster in 1988. The UN imposed sanctions on Libya until recently when Libya agreed in June to hand over two suspects for trial in the Netherlands -- Albawaba.com
