Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Wednesday on the Voice of Palestine radio that he had decided to suspend the interim accord talks with Israeli negotiator Oded Eran.
Erekat said they had held a series of fruitless discussions.
The suspension will remain in effect until Palestinian President Yasser Arafat learns more about Israel's attitude on a variety of topics on which the two sides disagree.
Erekat said Israel refused to free a new group of Palestinian prisoners and has dismissed a mechanism for a new Israeli pullback in the West Bank by June 23rd.
Arafat left Wednesday for Washington to hold talks with US President Bill Clinton Thursday on the peace process.
Israeli-Palestinian final-status negotiations on issues such as the fate of Jerusalem, the Palestinian statehood and borders, Palestinian refugees and Israeli settlements, as well as water-sharing, are underway in the United States – OCCUPIED JERUSALEM (AFP)
