Visiting Peruvian opposition leader Alejandro Toledo announced Thursday that he would be a candidate for the presidential poll to be held in his country next April.
"This is the first time I am announcing my candidacy since President Alberto Fujimori's decision to organize presidential elections," he said following a meeting with the speaker of the French National Assembly Raymond Forni.
Toledo was also to meet Thursday with President Jacques Chirac.
Toledo, who heads the opposition Peru Posible party, unsuccessfully challenged Fujimori in the presidential elections of April and May this year. He withdrew from the May second round in protest at what he said was lack of transparency in the vote.
