Palestinian President Yasser Arafat intends to resign as soon as the final status peace negotiations are concluded and the Palestinian state is declared, according to press reports in Cairo.
The weekly Al Ahram Al- Arabi reported that Arafat has already informed three presidents he met lately that he “would resign and dedicate his time for his personal life and the bringing up of his daughter, Zahwa.”
The leaders, according to the paper, are Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and US president Bill Clinton, in addition to President Zein El-Abdine bin Ali, whom Arafat informed of his wish to reside periodically in Tunis. It added that Arafat wishes also to reside in Cairo.
The weekly quoted Palestinian sources as saying that Arafat’s health has been worsened due the pressures caused by “the Israeli provocations related to the peace process.”
Al Ahram Al- Arabi said that Arafat is finding it difficult to choose his successor. However, it said that the president has informed the secretary general of the PLO, Mahmoud Abbas, that he planned to nominate him to the Palestinian National Council – Albawaba.com
