Egypt’s military ruler, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, on Sunday paid a surprise visit to Cairo’s Tahrir Square, according to Egyptian Youm 7 daily. Protesters have been camped out in the square for several weeks demanding an immediate end to military rule.
The visit was made to “ensure that traffic was running smoothly in the square,” another Egyptian daily Al Ahram newspaper reported.
Tahrir Square had been closed to cars until the last weekend.
Youm 7 conveyed Tantawi arrived at Tahrir without his security guards. Tantawi chatted with a number shopkeepers, reports added.
