The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised Bahrain's efforts in developing a sustainable integrated system for provision of mental health services at different levels, reported the Bahrain Tribune newspaper on Saturday.
Hussein A. Gezairy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, said that "Bahrain is among the countries of the region that have developed national mental health programs based on integrating mental health within primary health care".
"For a long time, mental health has not been given sufficient attention and support," he said, adding that promotion of positive mental health and prevention of disorders have hardly been among the priorities of health systems.
He said the patients are thus victimized twice.
"Once by the disease and its burden and again by stigma and deprivation of their natural right to treatment and care." – Albawaba.com
