The FA Cup is seen by many as Arsenal ’s greatest chance – in almost a decade – to end the trophy drought that has been going on since 2006. The club are in the semi-finals where they will face giant killers Wigan, but compared to the title race that involves three other teams, the odds of winning the FA Cup are much higher.
Arsene Wenger believes that the club can win a trophy this campaign and move onto the next level of competing with the top clubs.
The indifferent run of form since February has put Liverpool ahead of Arsenal, while the gunners could potentially be fourth after this weekend. They face one of several tough matches between now and the end of the season – a trip to Stamford Bridge. Ahead of the match, he said to the BBC:
"The next period is to deliver trophies and compete with everyone at the top level. We have great players, so I'm confident we can win trophies."
Wenger’s contract runs out in the summer and his future has been coming under intense scrutiny. The Frenchman has hinted that the club are responsible for the delays and that he has been more than happy to commit to Arsenal despite offers from several clubs. He continued:
"This club has given me a chance and I've turned many things down and shown my loyalty. How long will I continue? I am an idealist but not a fool, not crazy.
"I am at the stage of my career where I am extremely passionate, maybe more than ever, to do well for this club. But I have to accept that the next thousand will be difficult!"
Wenger will reach a landmark of 1000 games in charge of Arsenal. He joins the elite band of managers, which includes Sir Alex Ferguson, to have achieved this record. If Arsenal win a trophy this campaign, he may very well decide to follow the route of Fergie and step down.
After achieving a lot with Arsenal, he would not want to be remembered as the manager who could not win a trophy for a decade.
For all his records, the Champions League remains as a major regret for Wenger. He has not won this trophy, although he came close in 2006 when Arsenal were defeated by Barcelona with a late goal.
