Jose Mourinho said that he was going to make wholesale changes to the team that would face Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday night. His comments came after the Newcastle United match. He later backtracked by saying that he may make only a couple of changes. Some of the players like Andre Schurrle and John obi Mikel have done well when called upon. They could get a recall to the starting line-up.
The 3-0 win in the reverse puts Chelsea in a great position, but they need to maintain that position with a home victory. Another loss at home (after the opening day defeat against FC Basel) will simply be unacceptable.
Any traces of complacency following a great October might have vanished after the Newcastle defeat on Saturday. Mourinho may ask his team to get back to the basics and find the formula that made them a force to reckon with since the last international break.
Schalke will not be an easy opponent despite their poor showing at the Veltins Arena a fortnight ago. Schalke warmed up for this match with a 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin, but this was their first win in three matches. It was also the first clean sheet in five matches. Hence, they should be in good spirits.
Chelsea are joint top with the German club in the group.
Chelsea predicted squad: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle, Ba.
