One of the preseason favorites for the title, the Blues have done well but have had to depend on goals from midfield this term. Eden Hazard and Oscar have combined for 22 goals, whilst Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto'o have combined for only 12 in the Premier League. Chelsea have reportedly been looking for a new striker, and Atletico Madrid frontman Diego Costa looks to fit the bill. His manager Diego Simeone looks to not be standing in his way.
“[Chelsea] are very powerful,” Simeone said. “They have [Samuel] Eto'o, a great player, but they will think about alternatives and Costa could be one of them. He knows that on one side he could earn more money, but here he is going to compete. It would surprise me if the best teams in the world did not also come looking for Miranda, [Diego] Godin..."
“If Costa decides to go, it will be OK with me. Our philosophy is to make players better -- for us, that is something fundamental. When Falcao left for Monaco, you could not say no to him. He gave us life," he added.
Costa's proposed move, taking his 26 goals so far this term in La Liga to west London, also brings and interesting proposition. With Eto'o, Torres and Demba Ba, Chelsea would have an abundance of strikers leaving Torres with the opportunity to move on, and possibly to his boyhood club and help fill the void of Costa's departure. A move the Spanish striker seems interested in.
“In football you never know. You don’t know where you are going to be tomorrow, in a week’s time or in 10 years’ time,” Torres said. “I’ve had a lot of admiration [for Simeone] ever since we were teammates. He taught me a lot in the seasons we played together at Atleti."
Inter Milan have also shown interest in the Chelsea striker whose career looks more and more to be away from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea travel to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. An interesting situation: with Torres given the opportunity to play against the club of his youth, and Costa playing possibly against his next club.
