After constant speculation over his future in the summer, Wayne Rooney appears to have finally found the motivation to overtake Bobby Charlton in the Manchester United all-time top goalscorers list. Charlton is proudly sitting top of the list with 249 goals to his name. Rooney went past the 200 mark after two goals against Bayern Leverkusen in the 4-2 victory. These two goals add to the sublime freekick he scored against Crystal Palace during the weekend. After scoring three goals in the last two matches, he now appears ready to stamp his importance within the team once again.
Since the end of last season, Rooney has not spoken about his future. He was asked the question once again after the Leverkusen match. He tried to duck away from the question by saying that he is concentrating only on his football. He has spoken about the work he has done during pre-season in order to get himself fit. Fitness was a major problem for Rooney last season, but he appears to have definitely corrected this issue.
The reported repeated the question about his commitment to United. This prompted an angry response from Rooney. According to the Daily Mail, he said,
"Listen, I’ve just told you. I am concentrating on my football which I’ve been doing all summer."
David Moyes said in pre-season that Rooney was going to be a backup for Robin van Persie, but he since has been saying only good things about the England international. Last night, he praised Rooney for scoring 200 goals for United.
Despite being noncommittal in the TV interview, Rooney later said on Twitter that he is hoping to score more goals for United in the future.
"Great result tonight. Proud to score 200 goals for utd. Hopefully more to come," read his tweet.
Chelsea manager José Mourinho did hint that they tried to get Rooney to Stamford Bridge only because the player had made the first move. This clearly suggested that he was unhappy at United. Things do not appear to have changed a lot since then.
