Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes his former club can now seriously challenge for the title. After completing the £42.5million deadline day signing of Mesut Ozil and adding Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer from AC Milan, the Gunners now find themselves top of the table in England, level on points with Liverpool but just ahead on goals scored.
Pires is back in London now training with Arsene Wenger's side and providing valuable insight from his successful 6 year career as a Gunner. The Frenchman was a part of Arsenal's last title winning side in 2004, and now believes Wenger's men have what it takes to be successful in England once more.
'It's now possible for Arsenal to win as the young players have grown up and have more experience.'They also have a good mix for Wenger. If you put Ozil in the middle, I think it's a very good mix for Arsenal.' (via the Daily Mail)
Though Wenger has been criticized for selling his top players over the past several seasons, he was able to hold on to the core of his team this year, and the cohesion the Gunners have developed is now starting to show. With several strategic additions in Ozil and Flamini, Arsenal are playing sensational football and in both England and the Champions League.
While Pires believes the Premier League is certainly achievable, he's still uncertain if Arsenal have the quality and depth needed to seriously compete for the Champions League.
'Seriously, I think Arsenal have got the potential to win the Premier League,' Pires said.
'But the Champions League, I don't know.
'The most important thing is to focus on the league because it is very important for the club and for the fans.'
Arsenal continue to be linked to multiple players, especially strikers as January nears. The latest rumor circulation the papers is that Juventus striker Fernando Llorente could be headed to London on loan in January. The arrival of another striker would only help push Giroud and provide cover if injury or suspension hit unexpectedly.
