With the summer transfer deadline just days away, teams all over the world are scrambling to make last minute deals that could heighten their success this season. Some big names, including Juan Mata , David Luiz , and Angel Di Maria could be on the move in the final days, which could have a huge impact on the Premier League season. The last days of the transfer window are always some of the most exciting as clubs often make rash moves to get the players they need and want. Clubs often overpay for players in these final days and while the players themselves lick their lips at such a thought, fans are holding their breaths.
Let’s take a look at ten of the most talked about transfer rumors and deals ahead of the deadline:
1) David Luiz
The Mirror has reported that Manchester United will offer a bid of 30 million euro for Chelsea defender and Brazilian international David Luiz. Luiz has been the subject of much transfer talk this summer and was heavily linked to a move to Barcelona earlier this month, but nothing has materialized. United manager David Moyes does not think Luiz is a Jose Mourinho type player, which has him pursuing the center back as the transfer window wanes to a close.
2) Mesut Ozil
According to the Guardian, Real Madrid superstar and German international, Mesut Ozil, has shut down any possibility of a transfer from the Bernabeu. With reports of Gareth Bale soon to join Madrid, many have questioned Mesut Ozil’s consistent position in the lineup. Subsequently, Manchester United and Arsenal have shown interest in the midfielder, however, Ozil recently spoke out against the rumors saying, “I have a contract with Real Madrid and I am staying here. I want to be successful. A lot has been written in the media about other teams but I have the coach’s confidence and I feel very good. Also, I have a contract until 2016. I have a very good understanding with all my teammates and it is a pleasure and an hohonor to play for Real Madrid.” With just days left in the transfer window it seems as if Ozil isn’t going anywhere.
3) Angel Di Maria
According to goal.com, Arsenal has made a bid of 30 million euro for Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria. With Gareth Bale all but on the pitch for Real Madrid, it seems as if Di Maria’s position in the lineup, much like Mesut Ozil’s, is in question. If the bid is accepted, Arsenal would finally have the big name signing it has been searching for all summer and Di Maria would be a newfound spark on the wing for the Gunners to complement Theo Walcott. Turkish side Galatasaray is also pursuing the 25-year-old Argentine, but with no offers accepted yet, Di Maria is still up for grabs.
4) Karim Benzema
After rumors that Arsene Wenger and Arsenal were set to make a 40 million euro bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, the Sports World Report has reported that such talks have fizzled. The striker’s agent told Le Journal du Dimanche that Benzema will stay at the Bernabeu and that a move to the Emirates is out of the question saying, “We can’t stop the rumors. But I tell you: Karim will not go to Arsenal. It’s never been a question for him and no contact has been made.”
5) Maruoane Fellaini
According to multiple media sources including the Daily Mail, David Moyes and Manchester United’s 28 million euro bid for Everton duo, Maruoane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, was rejected and no further movement has been made. As the former boss of Everton, David Moyes has seemed keen on bringing some of his former players to Old Trafford, but new Everton manager Roberto Martinez seems set on keeping his inherited lineup. “I know there’s going to be talk about the transfer window but that’s not what we’re focusing on now when we’ve got an important game in front of us,” said Martinez. It is unclear whether or not Manchester United will make a further bid.
6) Stephane Sessegnon
Having been a consistent fixture in the Sunderland lineup for a couple of years now, Stephane Sessegnon looks to be on his way out of England. The midfielder, according to reports by the Daily Mail, will be on his way to Qatar club Al-Jaish for a fee of around 5 million euro. Sessegnon, who hails from Benin, has shown to be a fantastic talent during his time in the Premier League, but a reported riff with manager Pablo Di Canio has seemingly forced a move.
7) Peter Odemwingie
The Daily Mail is reporting that Swansea City is set to make a bid of 1.8 million pounds for West Bromwich striker Peter Odemwingie. Bids of 2 million pounds have already been made by Stoke City and Cardiff City, but no deal has been agreed upon. The 32-year-old Nigerian would be an interesting signing for Swansea especially considering his age and his recent behavior, but manager Michael Laudrup believes Odemwingie could bring a spark to the offense.
After publically voicing his unhappiness at Zenit St. Petersburg, Brazilian midfielder Hulk has been linked with a move to Tottenham and a reunion with former Porto boss Andres Villas-Boas. According to the Mirror, Spurs are preparing a 30 million euro bid for the winger, but were told that Zenit is unwilling to negotiate unless such talks start at 40 million euro. Hulk would be a fantastic addition to Tottenham who has already looked a big, strong, formidable squad this season.
9) Juan Mata
With the recent signings of Brazilian Willian and Eto’o from Russia, it seems as if Juan Mata’s position in the lineup is in jeopardy. According to reports by the Guardian, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Atletico Madrid are all interested in the midfielder’s services, but such rumors are just speculation at this point. Another report by the Daily Star on Wednesday surmised that a swap of Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata would be a great deal for both Chelsea and Manchester United, but nothing official has been reported. Such a move would in fact benefit both squads with Mata adding the creative presence in the midfield David Moyes has been searching for al summer, while Mourinho would finally get his man. With just days left in the transfer window, Mata could have an unhappy season if no deal is worked out.
10) Erik Lamela
According to the Daily Star, Tottenham has reached a deal to sign AS Roma striker Erik Lamela. The deal is reportedly worth around 30 million euro and the 21-year-old Argentine is scheduled to arrive at White Hart Lane by Wednesday to complete the signing. Having missed out on signing Willian and with other rumors still in speculation stage, Tottenham will get a very good player in Lamela who could even challenge Roberto Soldado for playing time up top.
