Since making his debut in 2002,Victor Valdés has always been reliable. He is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Barcelona's history, having won a total of 19 trophies including five La Liga titles, three Champions League titles, and two Copa Del Rey titles. The Spanish international currently holds the club records as goalkeeper with most appearances in the league and in official competition, breaking Andoni Zubizarreta's records during the 2011–12 season.
With the Spanish international likely to leave this summer, we take a look at several replacements that could fill the void left by the Barcelona legend.
Marc André ter Stegen
Stegen, who recently rejected a new contract at Borussia Mönchengladbach, has really emerged as a transfer target for Spanish giants Barcelona. The 21-year-old has developed a reputation as one of the hottest prospects in Europe. With many reports suggesting that Ter Stegen will move to Spain, Barcelona have also got other young and talented goalkeepers in their books. When he made his debut in 2011, he was seen as a major talent for club and country. Having found a replacement for him just last week, Gladbach wouldn't mind him leaving but for a club to let such a talented goalkeeper to go for free is not what they wanted.
Celtic's English goalkeeper Fraser Forster really impressed in last season's Champions League. He failed to break into the first team at Newcastle but current Celtic manager Neil Lennon saw him as a world-class goalkeeper. Before joining Celtic in 2011,he was a target for the Championship clubs in England. Since then, he has become a fan favourite at Celtic. Despite being one of their key players, he could be lured away for the right price.
On loan from Liverpool, Pepe Reina is currently enjoying a run of games at Italian giants Napoli. The Spaniard was signed from Villarreal by former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez in 2005. Before that,he enjoyed coming out of the ranks of Barcelona's youth system. Due to his age,he might not be a real transfer target for Barcelona. Because of his vast experience in the Barclays Premier League, however, he could convince the Catalan side to make a move for him the summer.Per The Mirror Sport, Reina has expressed his desire to play for Barcelona next season. He has also said that he might not be playing for Liverpool next season because of new first choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
At the end of last season,Vicente Guaita was linked with a move away from Valencia to Barcelona. The transfer would have been easier for both clubs due to the lack of first team appearances. The 27-year-old is too good to be stuck in the reserves, and it appears the player himself agrees.Inside Spanish Football reported back in April this year that Barcelona were set to sign Vicente Guaita from Valencia as Valdes' replacement. However, this did not happen because Valdes decided to stay for one more season.
